"My work has been heavily influenced by the WPA posters created in the 1930s. Bixby Bridge was also a WPA project, built in 1934/36, so, it was an easy choice for me to create this image. The Bixby Bridge was one of a number of WPA projects built along this section of Highway 1, literally connecting northern California with southern. Prior to the bridges' construction, the area around Big Sur was often cut off from the rest of the state during winter storms, so the completion of the highway was a major milestone in California history. Of course, the coastline along Big Sur is amazing too with breathtaking views of the Pacific and the sheer cliffs dropping hundreds of feet to the water. It's another incredible feature of Highway 1, and for me, these elegant bridges only enhance the scenery. 'Bixby Bridge' is a 9 color print and required over 2,200 hand-pulled color impressions to complete." ~Jake
